The Project

"Hidden Herstories" is a vibrant documentary constructed by 20 young film-makers as part of a community initiative organised by the Octavia Foundation and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Following the award-winning Grove Roots, "Hidden Herstories" details the social and political successes of four influential women, truly mavericks of their time.

The women are; Octavia Hill - social housing pioneer, Amy Ashwood Garvey - first wife of Marcus Garvey and organiser of the women’s section of the UNIC, Jayaben Desai - leader of the Grunwick Strike of 1977 and Claudia Jones - the "Mother of the Notting Hill Carnival", and each have their own section of the documentary detailing their struggle, perseverance and triumphs.

Pre-production began in the area of Ladbroke Grove however the actual production (recording) took the group, under the mentorship of the young film-makers of Grove Roots, on a global quest to uncover the mystery surrounding these women's great and still relevant contributions.

Viewers should look forward to refreshing input from interviewees such as the well renowned filmmaker and musician Don Letts, MP Karen Buck, singer Ms Dynamite and MC Akala and also the director of "Bend it like Beckham" Gurinder Chadha to name a few. Other interviews go as far a field as India and Guyana, in a historic film spanning three continents.

Supplemented with a bright magazine providing further insight into the women documented and the film-makers themselves, "Hidden Herstories" is an exciting and educational documentary and is not one to be missed.

The film premieres on the 6th of March 2010 during the weekend of International Women's Day at the London School of Economics. Hope to see you there!

"Hidden Herstories" has been a journey for all of us, now we share it with you.
